I love the whimsy of this piece! This heart pendant was inspired by the 19th Century needle holders from the collections of both the Nantucket Whaling Museum and the New Bedford Whaling Museum. The original needle holders were made of whale ivory and were popular things for sailors to make on shipboard for their wives and sweethearts during their idle hours at sea. Women secured these needle holders to their smocks or aprons by sewing them on using the tiny holes along the edges. That way they always had a needle at hand when they needed one. I decided to fill the little holes on this version with small diamonds!
